In the past few weeks I have been fortunate enough to attend a private screening of Precious and the world premiere of Disney's Princess and the Frog. They both were enjoyable experiences and if I could do them all over again I would.
Precious, with its heavy subject matter, was just that, HEAVY. Deep, moving, nauseating, disturbing and probably other things that I just can't find the right words to say. At this point I'm sure most of the world has seen it and if you haven't GO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It left me speechless without a smile although we see its main character muster up enough strength to overcome her past and look to a brighter future. Now, as I type to the world, I long to see it again, with a different audience and I almost want to come out of the theater with a different frame of mind than I did when I left the screening. The audience, I must say, laughed way too much for me at stuff that I knew was normal but for some reason was funny to them. The audience alone angered me. Their lack of sensitivity to the characters. Their lack of knowledge, their ignorance to the real world. It bothered me.......
But on a happier note... This year has been a major one for African Americans and it has neared its end with finally a African American princess, Tiana. Setting a great example for all little African American girls near and far, that they too can be princess, have dreams and strive for them by working hard. The film and concept I must say is not late. As they say about God, it's right on time. It deals with good and evil and life and death, some of which I thought was a little bit much for girls ages 4-8. But it was amazing to be on the red carpet and see all the actors and singers(Anika Noni Rose as Tiana, Terrence Howard, Ne-yo and a lot others), it was amazing. The only disappointment is that the one person that likes to make history and played a role in the film did not attend. OPRAH SHAME ON YOU!!!! For someone who so badly wants to change the perceptions of young african american girls across the globe, you should have been the first to attend. SMH... Shame on you!
.... I guess that's it! The only thing left to do is LIVE, LOVE, CREATE...
